You Are What You Eat

“It is vitally important that we can continue to say, with absolute conviction, that organic farming delivers the highest quality, best-tasting food, produced without artificial chemicals or genetic modification, and with respect for animal welfare and the environment, while helping to maintain the landscape and rural communities.” Prince Charles spoke these words in hopes of enlightening his country about the benefits of an organic lifestyle.

Because organic products are much safer than traditional products, and because organic farming eliminates the torturous, cruel, and disgusting treatment of our nation’s livestock, the choice to “go green” should defiantly be contemplated.

Simply put, organic foods are better for our bodies than artificially flavored and/or genetically modified foods. Living organically is living healthily. According to an article by Maria Rodale entitled “15 Ways to Change the World (and your life) One Apple at a Time”, quote: “Organic foods are safer because they are produced without dangerous chemicals and preventive antibiotics. Organic producers also eschew cheap but risky practices (to say nothing of disgusting ones), like feeding dead cows to living cows or dumping human sewage sludge onto farm fields.”

Not many people realize that there are dangerous chemicals in the food that we eat everyday. Because of shockingly low governmental subsidies, and even more shockingly low food quality regulations, farmers usually drench their crops with dangerous pesticides and hazardous chemicals to ensure a plentiful harvest. These dangerous chemicals are meant to kill the insects that attempt to eat the crops. However, this forces us to ask the question: If it’s gotten to the point where bugs won’t eat our food- then what makes it safe for us?  Dangerous chemicals such as aspartame, propyl gallate, BHA, BHT, potassium bromate, monosodium glutamate, acesulfame-K, olestra, sodium nitrite, hydrogenated vegetable oil, blue 1, blue 2, red 3, and yellow 6 have been scientifically linked to the following symptoms and diseases: cancer, diabetes, diarrhea, excitotoxic damage, abdominal cramps, thyroid disease, loose stools, heart disease, brain tumors, and sudden cardiac death.

Aspartame, a toxic artificial sweetener that has been proven to cause cancer, is found in nearly all diet beverages, gums, and candy. Janet Starr Hull, in her article “The Dangers of Artificial Sweeteners”, said the following: “Artificial sweeteners are a laboratory mixture of unnatural chemicals that the body can’t process. Basically, these chemicals either accumulate in your vital organs, pollute your bloodstream, or create eventual mutations of your cells. Our bodies are like machines (only natural) that operate today just as they did thousands of years ago. They don’t understand man-made chemicals and cannot fully process them. Forcing foreign materials into your body is like pouring shampoo into your car’s gas tank: it wasn’t meant to process it, so the engine stalls and stops working.” On the other hand, organic food does not contain the toxic ingredients that normal shelf-food contains.

As you can see, the reasons to “go green” with our food are numerous. Now that we have seen the health benefits of organic food, perhaps we can all think differently about the things that we put into our bodies. And always remember what your grandmother told you: you are what you eat.
